What personal data we collect, and why
Comments
When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, plus the visitor's IP address and browser user agent string to help with spam detection.
An anonymized string created from your email address (a "hash") may be provided to the Gravatar service to check whether you use it. The Gravatar service's privacy policy is at automattic.com/privacy. After your comment is approved, your profile picture is visible to the public alongside it.
Contact forms
Our contact forms collect your name, email address, and the text of your message. This information is sent as an email to the site owners. We do not otherwise store it.
Mailing list
Our mailing-list forms collect your email address. You will be asked by email to confirm your subscription before you are added to the list.
Your submission is stored in Mailchimp, our bulk-email provider. While you are on the list, you receive one to two emails per week from Unseen Japan. You can unsubscribe at any time via the link at the bottom of any email, and you can request deletion of your data through our contact form. We do not otherwise store this information.
Cookies
If you leave a comment on our site, you may opt in to saving your name, email address, and website in cookies so you do not have to fill them in again the next time you comment. These cookies last for one year.
If you visit our login page, we set a temporary cookie to determine whether your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.
When you log in we also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen-display choices. Login cookies last for two days; screen-options cookies last for a year. If you select "Remember Me", your login persists for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies are removed.
If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie is saved in your browser. It contains no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after one day.
Embedded content from other websites
Articles on this site may include embedded content (videos, images, social-media posts, and similar). Embedded content from other websites behaves exactly as if you had visited that site directly.
These third-party sites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional tracking, and monitor your interaction with the embedded content, including tracking your interaction if you have an account and are logged in to that site.
How long we keep your data
If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are kept indefinitely. This lets us recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
For users who register on the website, we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. Users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Site administrators can also see and edit that information.
What rights you have over your data
If you have an account on this site, have left comments, or are subscribed to our mailing list, you can request a file containing the personal data we hold about you, including any data you provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security reasons.
Where we send your data
Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam-detection service.
