Jillian Marshall, PhD, is a Brooklyn-based writer, ethnomusicologist, and educator. She holds an AB in East Asian Languages and Civilizations from the University of Chicago, and a PhD in Musicology, with a focus on contemporary Japanese music, from Cornell University. Her first book, a pop-anthropological memoir on her time in Japan "researching music" (i.e. going to parties), is called JAPANTHEM: Counter-Cultural Experiences, Cross-Cultural Remixes, and came out this year with Three Rooms Press. A vinyl head and jazz snob, Jillian also plays trumpet and piano-- and photographic evidence of her djing poorly in a few Japanese clubs floats somewhere on the internet.
